A friend loaned me the film, “Cover”, by Bill Duke.  I hesitated to blog this but I couldn’t restrained myself.  This short 98 minute film is about black men predominantly who are considered “down low”; in other words, these are married men who love other men.  There’s one scene that really convicted me.  [Note: “Dutch” is the name of a character in the film; “Val” is the name of a character too.  “Ruth” is not a name of a character.  I simply used names to make the proceeding explanation less confusing.]  An African American lady (“Val”) exposed another African American woman’s (“Ruth”) husband (“Dutch”).  “Ruth” went to a hotel at the urging of Val who incidentally gave her a hotel key.  There Ruth found her husband, Dutch, in the shower with another man (Val’s ex husband).  After a church meeting, Ruth runs to catch Val before she leaves and says, “Thank you.”  They exchanged more words then Val said this, “they (men who love other men) have too much to loose if they tell the truth.”  That statement cut me!  I am confident Val was talking about how the church condemns “certain sinners” (like Dutch) to hell.   So, men like Dutch have too much to loose if they tell the truth.   When will the church realize that she is a hospital for jacked up people and not a country club?
